W3C Web of Things 1.1 specifications are W3C Recommendations

  The  Web of Things Working Group  published today three W3C Recommendations and recently updated supporting W3C Notes, thus enhancing with new functionalities the standards that enable interoperability across  IoT  platforms and application domains: Web of Things Architecture 1.1  describes the abstract architecture for the W3C Web of Things for multiple application domains; Web of Things Thing Description 1.1  describes the metadata and interfaces of Things, which are abstractions of physical or virtual entities that interact to and participate in the Web of Things; Web of Things Discovery  supports the distribution of WoT Thing Descriptions in a variety of use cases, including ad-hoc and engineered systems, during development and at runtime, and on local and global networks. W3C re-launched as a public-interest non-profit organization

  The World Wide Web Consortium began the year 2023 by forming a new public-interest non-profit organization. The new entity preserves our member-driven approach, existing worldwide outreach and cooperation while allowing for additional partners around the world beyond Europe and Asia. The new organization also preserves the core process and mission of the Consortium to shepherd the web, by developing open web standards as a single global organization with contributions from W3C Members, staff, and the international community. Web Audio API is a W3C Recommendation

  The  Audio Working Group  has published  Web Audio API  as a W3C Recommendation. This specification describes a high-level Web API for creating, shaping, and processing audio directly in a Web browser or in web applications. With the API standardized and deployed as a royalty-free feature in Web browsers and other devices and platforms, both on desktop and mobile, creating sound with the Web Audio API has become a dependable, widely available, built-in capability, eliminating the need to install plugins or download separate applications. You may read more in our  Press Release .

W3C awards Website Redesign Project to Studio 24

25 February 2020 The  W3C Website redesign Request For Proposals  has concluded with W3C awarding the project to  Studio 24 , a small, independent digital agency in the heart of Cambridge, UK, founded in 1999. The project covers a subset of the public-facing pages of our Website and will span the next 10 months. Please, read more in our  joint press release . We are aiming for  this phase  to scale well to cover the redesign expectations for the rest of the site. Future phases will include the Member and Team spaces, internal Work Groups homepages, specifications template, mailing lists archives, W3C Community Groups and Business Groups. W3C Recommends WebAssembly to push the limits for speed, efficiency and responsiveness

5 December 2019 The  WebAssembly Working Group  has published today the three WebAssembly specifications as W3C Recommendations, marking the arrival of a new language for the Web which allows code to run in the browser. WebAssembly Core Specification  defines a low-level virtual machine which closely mimicks the functionality of many microprocessors upon which it is run. Either through Just-In-Time compilation or interpretation, the WebAssembly engine can perform at nearly the speed of code compiled for a native platform. A  .wasm  resource is analogous to a Java  .class  file in that it contains static data and code segments which operate over that static data. Unlike Java, WebAssembly is typically produced as a compilation target from other programming languages like C/C++ and Rust. W3Cx Introduction to Web Accessibility – New Online Course

3 December 2019 On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, W3C and the  UNESCO  Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) launched a new W3Cx course: “ Introduction to Web Accessibility “. The course is designed for  technical and non-technical audiences , including developers, designers, content authors, project managers, people with disabilities, and others. The course will start on 28 January 2020 and is self-paced. 10 April 2018 W3C and the FIDO Alliance have achieved a major standards milestone in the global effort to bring simpler yet stronger web authentication to users around the world. The completion of the FIDO2 standardization efforts, the  recent advancement of Web Authentication (WebAuthn) to Candidate Recommendation , –and the commitment of leading browser vendors to implement– enable users to login easily to online services with desktop or mobile devices with phishing-resistant security.  WebAuthn , a standard web API to give users new methods to securely authenticate across sites and devices, has been developed in coordination with FIDO Alliance and is a core component of the FIDO2 Project along with FIDO’s  Client to Authenticator Protocol (CTAP) specification, which enables an external authenticator, such as a security key or a mobile phone, to communicate strong authentication credentials locally over USB, Bluetooth or NFC to the user’s computer or tablet.
